Mumbai Grahak Panchayat and its role in consumer rights protection are quite significant as it helps consumers to take informed decisions. This MGP was established in the year 1975 with the aim to make them aware of their rights and responsibilities. To apprise, it is a consumer activist group that is involved in fighting consumer court cases on behalf of consumers. They work for both small issues such as water purifier deceptive ad and big issues like investment in property.
Today, it has become one of India’s largest voluntary organisations having almost and over 33,000 volunteers. The Mumbai Grahak Panchayat is also concerned for the public distribution of goods and consumer rights activism.
What Are The Popular Movements By Mumbai Grahak Panchayat?
Since the establishment, the MGP has been an active and voluntary organisation that takes participation in fighting for consumer rights. The issue can be relating to home buying, advertisement misleading or any other malpractices. So, some of the popular movements undertaken by MGP:
- Refund to airline passengers: They have been a great help in the tough times of the COVID-19. The MGP, along with the Pravasi Legal Cell, decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court for refund of airfare to the passengers, whose flights were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the powerful Supreme Court ordered a full refund or provision of a ‘credit shell’ of amount equal to the fare collected benefiting many consumers.
- Refund to 800 home buyers, after 34 years: The Mumbai Grahak Panchayat works efficiently and dedicatedly even for the real estate industry. They fought the legal battle for saving the interest of the homebuyers who bought properties for sale. As in Virar affordable housing scheme, where the projects were incomplete, the case against the developer lodged. They forced the purchasers of the residential property to approach the consumer court and MGP represented the case.
- Ad withdrawal by a water purifier company: Out of many, one of the famous water purifier companies had to withdraw an allegedly misleading ad. The advertisement claimed that its purifier systems are highly effective in disinfecting the deadly COVID-19 virus from personal use items such as fruits and vegetables.
